The Diamond

The diamond, product of the nature and sample of its extreme strengths, has always attracted the eyes and the hart of the human being, until it became the perfect symbiosis of luxury item and investment item that we know today. Extracted from the deepness of the earth it becomes, after a careful and experienced procedure, the quintessence of brilliancy and prestige: the gem that we all appreciate. Only minimal parts of the diamonds found are used in the jewelry business. This rarity is the first reason for their very high value.

The Different Shapes

There are different shapes of polished diamonds that vary from the fancy ones (nowadays it is possible to obtain almost any shape thanks to the new technologies) to the classical ones, of which the typical round brilliant cut is the most known.

Guaranteed Quality Control

In the last thirty years the sector of the diamond industry has searched the best way to guarantee to the final customer the certitude of the authenticity and of the value of the gem that he is about to purchase. A system of values has been created that besides the weight calculated in carats, determines the color (from the perfect white to the darkest shades of yellow), the clarity (measured by a loop 10X and by microscope) and the quality of the polishing (very important to obtain the maximal optical effect).

Consequently gemological laboratories have been opened all over the world, that are able to determinate, with the utmost impartiality, the quality of the gem that has been brought to them by measuring the weight (carats), the color, the clarity and the cut (these are the famous 4 Cs).

Three international labs have gained a credibility recognized worldwide:
  • The Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) of Antwerp.
  • The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) of New York and Los Angeles.
  • The International Gemological Institute (IGI) based principally in Antwerp.
Naturally the cost of these certificates implies that only diamonds of a high value and weight are usually analyzed. Regarding any diamond of a lesser weight and value the buyer has to refer to the old and precious rule:
